Sonia lays foundation of Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor

Patna, (Bihar Times): The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, said that the Manmohan Singh government had made all-round development in the last over four years in the office and notwithstanding the global meltdown the country was still making rapid progress.

Laying the foundation stone of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor at Dehri-on-Sone in Rohtas district on Tuesday afternoon she said that be it the NREGA or waiving of Rs 75,000 crore bank loans to the farmers or creating rail and road infrastructure the Union government had done excellent works.

She said that the construction of the Freight Corridor would provide job opportunities to the people of the region and appreciated the works done by the railways. She hit out at the BJP for dividing the country on the communal lines.

Speaking on the occasion the Railway Minister Lalu Yadav, explained the purpose of the construction of the Freight Corridor and highlighted the achievements made by the Railways during his tenure. He said that the Freight Corridor would revolutionized the whole concept of transportation.

Taking a dig at the state government he said that the Nitish Kumar government had failed on all the fronts and had completely destroyed the education system in the state. “I used to appoint teachers after competition. Now the Nitish government had entrusted this responsibility to the panchayats. The mukhiyas are going to jail as they are held responsible for the illegal appointments.”

Lalu said that notwithstanding so much central funds the state government had failed to utilize it. He even raised the issue of increase in migration from Bihar and the rise in Maoists’ activities, which incidentally led to the killing of 10 jawans on Monday.
The total length of the Western and Eastern Corridors is 3300 km route kilometers. The total length of the Eastern Corridor is 1,850 km. These two corridors will greatly improve the freight transportation across India leading to faster development and progress of the nation.

Goods train can run upto the speed of 100 km per hour on this route. The Freight Corridor will run parallel to the existing rail line. The Corridor will by-pass populated cities and towns to minimize social and environmental impact. It will reduce unit cost of transportation and facilitate running of longer and heavier trains. This will also ensure guaranteed transit time. The transportation will be much quicker and reliable. The Dedicated Freight Corridoras will accelerate the industrial development in the region around them.
