Amartya Sen spends three hours in Nalanda

Patna, (Bihar Times): Heading a 12-member Mentor Group Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen on Friday visited the site of the proposed Nalanda International University (NIU), four km from Rajgir, and also spent more than three hours amid the ruins of the ancient Nalanda university.

He said that there can be no deadline for setting up the world class university and further added that the Group does not want to compromise on the standard. Sen said that the fund will flow from all over the world for the University.

Reports said that the Group will submit a concrete proposal at the next summit of the South East Asian Countries, which in turn will send its proposal to the government of India, to act accordingly.

The Group has so far organised five such meetings held at various places, including Singapore and Tokyo.

It needs to be mentioned that the idea of the global university was first mooted by former president APJ Abdul Kalam in early 2006. The proposed university will be fully residential like the ancient Nalanda varsity. The NIU will offer courses in science, philosophy, mathematics, management and spiritualism along with other Buddhist subjects.

A film on Nalanda made by 'Prachin Bharat Tourism' was also shown to the visiting delegates on the occasion. The film gives an idea of the ancient glory of Nalanda.
