Kanti’s ‘sautan’ breaks silence, seeks share in property

Patna, (Bihar Times): Three decades after remaining ‘silent’ a woman, Lalita Devi, has claimed that she is the first wife of Keshav Singh, the husband of Union minister, Kanti Singh. On Wednesday she chose to speak out out against the duo. But her anger was directed less against the husband and more against the minister––the co-wife or souten.

Reports said that Lalita Devi on Wednesday accused the minister of denying her share in the ancestral property. “I am before you after all my pleas fell on the deaf ears of my husband and his second wife,” she told the mediaperson in Sasaram. She said all her efforts to meet the RJD chief, Lalu Prasad, were blocked by none else but Kanti and her supporters.

She said that she would now be putting up her case before the Janata Darbar of the chief minister, Nitish Kumar.

Lalita of Kamhari village under the Ramgarh police station of Kaimur district was married to Keshav, now a retired engineer in the Bihar government hailing from Ojhawalia village under the Kochas police station of Rohtas district, in 1963. She said she came to know about her husband’s second marriage five years after it was solemnized clandestinely in the 1970s.

“It was to save my in-laws from social stigma that I kept mum,” she told newsmen. However, she alleged, her husband and his second wife later forced her to go to her parents’ place and live there.

Lalita is issueless and was accompanied at the Press meet by her brother Vishwanath Singh, once a famous wrestler of the area and now a supporter of RJD.

He told newsmen that he and his sister would campaign against Kanti in the coming Lok Sabha election. His sister has been denied all her legal and social rights as the wife of Keshav who retired from the service about a decade back.

On her part Kanti Singh described the whole story as a dirty political conspiracy being hatched by her opponents, both within and outside the party.

She was quoted as saying that no one has prevented Lalita from exercising her rights though it is another matter that she had never met her. She said she often visited her in-laws place at Ojhawalia but never saw Lalita there.

Whatever be the truth politically the issue has cropped up at very wrong time for Kanti Singh.
