Bihar govt fines firm for delay in plugging Kosi breach

 

Patna, (Bihar Times): The Bihar government has imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on Vashistha Construction Company of Andhra Pradesh, the firm which was assigned the task of plugging the breach in the embankment of river Kosi at Kusaha in Nepal for the slow progress of work at the construction site.

According to Ajay Nayak, the principal secretary of the state water resources department, the firm was assigned the job for plugging the breach at Kusaha. But the company failed to meet the deadline of December 15 set for the completion of the project and was therefore fined.

Nayak said of the 1.6 km long breach in the embankment, 1.4 km breach had already been plugged and the rest work was likely to be completed by the end of the current month.
The other related works will be certainly competed by March end, the secretary said adding that the Kosi Breach Closure Advisory Committee has instructed the state government to complete the work by May this year.
Nayak said that besides fining the construction company, the government has suspended the executive engineer deputed at the site and salaries of some others were withheld. The action has been been initiated for dereliction of duty as they failed to meet the earlier target of December 15, 2008 set by the department to complete the construction work of coffer dam and breach plugging work.

It needs to be mentioned that the state government has sought permission from the Centre for the visit of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to Kusaha in Nepal to oversee the breach plugging work and also the construction of coffer dams.
