Throwing garbage on roads to be made punishable soon

Patna, (Bihar Times): Now people throwing garbage on eight premier roads of Patna will have to pay a fine of Rs 500. If he or she is caught the next time the urban development department may take legal action under relevant Sections of IPC.

The roads where garbage throwing are to be banned are Station Road, Boring Canal Road, Ashok Rajpath, Exhibition Road, Fraser Road, Dak Bungalow Road, Bhattacharya Road and Bailey Road up to canal.

The department has directed the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) to identify garbage points on all these eight roads and also to depute officials who would be responsible for regular garbage lifting from these points.

Shopkeepers and residents of these roads would have to keep their own dustbins and garbage generated by them would either be collected by the PMC or they can dump the garbage at identified points only. The department is also providing vehicles to the PMC in which special teams would move on the notified roads for keeping a tab on the defaulters.

“Advertisements in this regard would soon appear in newspapers and residents and shopkeepers would be given 15-day time for getting accustomed to the new system,” urban development secretary Dipak Kumar was quoted in the Times of India.

In days to come the whole city would be brought under its purview. This would be done after identification of the required number of garbage points in all the localities and putting in place the necessary manpower for regular lifting of garbage and slapping fine on violators, he said.

The PMC, it must be recalled, had earlier proposed to implement a similar kind of system, but it failed to take off due to lack of proper support system.

The other problem is that most of the time the garbage are thrown by the domestic-helps, who are not aware of the rules. Only time will tell how much their masters teach them about the new rules.
