IMA demands law for the protection of doctors

Patna, (Bihar Times): Piqued by the repeated attacks on the doctors in Bihar the state chapter of the Indian Medical Association on Saturday demanded promulgation of an Ordinance or bringing a Bill by the Bihar Government for  protection of medical service professionals and institutions in the  state.

According to state president Raman Kumar Verma and secretary Arun Kumar Thakur said such a legislation has already been enacted in Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh. They said that this is the crying need of the hour for the improvement in health care delivery in government, semi-government as well as private organisations. They said that it goes without saying that doctors and their establishments have become soft targets of irresponsible and unsocial elements hampering their professional work.

IMA strongly feels that there is also urgent need for improving doctor-patient relationship and doctor-doctor-relationship. This  will go a long way in bridging the communication gap.

It needs to be recalled that last May-June the PMCH doctors went on strike thrice alleging that they were being attacked by the attendants of the patients.

However, the IMA congratulated the Bihar government for implementing the Janani-Bal Suraksha Yojana leading to a steep rise in institutional deliveries from 10 per cent to 42 per cent and immunization up to 61 per cent from 12 per cent.
