Lively glimpse of Mithila’s folk culture on Bihar tableau

Patna (Bihar Times)  : A point of special attraction at the national celebration of Republic Day will be the tableau presented by the State of Bihar, which is focusing on the Mithila’s historical folk culture of Saurath Sabha and Madhubani Paintings. Around three thousand years old, Mithila’s folk language, paintings, handicrafts and dances would be the special attraction of the Republic day parade in Delhi this year.

The tableaux comprise of 12 glimpses from different Indian states and six from the central government's ministries and departments. Their number, however, has been reduced from last year's 26 to accommodate the larger number of gallantry award winners who will receive their medals from President Pratibha Patil before the start of the parade.

“The selection of the theme ‘Mithila ki Lok Sanskriti” by Information and Public Relations (IPRD) for inclusion in tableau was done to highlight the rich Mithila Culture of Bihar. The folk culture of Mithila has sprinkled its fragrance in many areas. Folk arts, food habits, arts of their living, marriages, dances etc. of this area have a different but a special identity. In the field of art work, Mithila is kept not only on a high pedestal but also has been a centre of attraction. The ‘Madhubani Paintings’- full of natural colors, painted on the mud walls of these areas mud houses, textiles and hand made papers has now a days acquired an international acclaim” informed  a senior IPRD official.

“On the tableau of Bihar, this year a unique and lively glimpse of marriage ceremony of “Saurath Sabha”, quite renowned in Mithila along with their dresses, decorations of their houses etc. will be prominently displayed. In Mithila, only one of its kinds, tradition of settling marriages at an assembly of ‘Maithil’ people has grown up which is known to the world as “Saurath Sabha”. At this assembly on a specific day, the bride and groom sides choose their suitable marriage partners without any outside influence”, he added.

However, the role of paintings is not only of special importance in Mithila folk culture but at the same time it encompasses the glimpses of the spiritual and cultural essence of the whole of India. Here people dance and sing to amuse their deities. They express their happiness through their different dance forms called “Jhijhia Nach”, “Jat-Jatin Nach”, and “Sama-Chakeva Nach” which is generally performed by the girls and women of this region.
