Nitish seeks Rs 5,000 crore from Centre to fight drought

Patna,(BiharTimes): For the second time in two years the Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, flew to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to seek drought relief for 28 districts of the state.

He met Manmohan on Satruday and sought financial assistance of over Rs 5,000 crore from the Centre to tackle the drought situation.

He later said that the government is keeping a watch on the rest 10 districts too and may declare them drought-hit if the rainfall is not sufficient in August.

Nitish also told reporters that the Prime Minister assured him that a Central team would visit the state to assess the situation.

He said that immediate financial assistance from the Centre is required to meet the situation as Bihar has negative balance in state Calamity Relief Fund.

The chief minister said that the state Government would need more funds to tackle the situation but that will be discussed with the Centre in the second stage.
