Nitish hopeful of central assistance for drought

Patna,(BiharTimes): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said on Monday that though the Centre did not provide adequate financial assistance to tackle drought in 26 districts in 2009 and floods in 2007 and 2008, he is still hopful it will release enough funds this time as there is a shortage in the state Calamity Relief Fund.

Talking to reporters after return from New Delhi where he also met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh he said that the latter had agreed to send a central team to assess the situation in 28 of 38 districts that were declared drought affected by the Bihar government.

He reiterated what he said in New Delhi on Saturday that the authorities are monitoring the situation in the remaining 10 districts and if the areas fail to receive adequate rainfall in the current month, then they will also be declared drought-hit.

In New Delhi Nitish submitted a memorandum to Manmohan seeking Rs 5062.75 crore central assistance to tackle the drought.
