SSB jawans go berserk kill four villagers in Araria

Patna,(BiharTimes): Four people, including a woman, were killed and five others injured in a firing by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawans in Batraha village under Kursakant police station of Araria district of north-east Bihar. SSB is a central para-military force deployed on international border with Nepal to check the Maoists’ activists and smuggling.

The Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Mohammad Qasim, said the villagers of Batraha went to the SSB’s border outpost and complained to officials that some of their personnel had misbehaved with a woman of the village on Sunday night.
But the SSB officials refused to accept the charge. So there was no question of action against anyone. This infuriated the villagers and they started protesting.
The SSB personnel, instead of informing the matter to the district administration took batons into their hands and started beating them. Subsequently they opened fire on the protestors.
One report said the woman was in fact killed inside her house and not on the spot where the people were protesting.
Those killed are Mohammad Shahnawaz, Mohammad Jabir, Mohammad Qurban and Farhat Jahan.
Reacting to the incident Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar announced the payment of Rs one lakh as ex gratia to the family of each of the four people, who lost their lives. He assured that action would be taken against the SSB jawans involved in the incident.
The Janata Dal (United) Rajya Sabha MP, Ali Anwar, has sought payment of Rs five lakh by the central government to relatives of all the four who lost their lives in Monday’s firing.
Three of the SSB jawans have so far been arrested.
