Teachers’ strike called off, but non-teaching to continue stir

Patna,(Bihar Times): An agreement between the government and the representatives of the joint action committee (JAC) of the Federation of University Teachers’ Association of Bihar (FUTAB) and the Federation of University(Service) Teachers’ Association of Bihar (FUSTAB) led to the withdrawal of the indefinite strike by the University and college teachers on Wednesday.

The strike, which started on July 8, ended after the negotiations between JAC leaders with Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Hari Narain Singh and HRD Principal Secretary Anjani Kumar Singh concluded on Wednesday.

The Minister said that he was happy that the issues were resolved within a week. It will help reduce the damage to the new academic session. The government had announced the Sixth University Grants Commission (UGC) pay-scales for university teachers on June 29 and approved the revised salary with new nomenclature of posts on July 6. Still the teachers went on strike, halting academic activities.

Meanwhile, talks between non-teaching employees of Universities and the state government failed once again on Wednesday following which the Bihar State University and College Employees Federation announced to continue the indefinite strike. They have paralyzed the work in 250 colleges of nine universities since July 1. They announced to further intensify their agitation.
