PSUs suffer loss of Rs 3,593 crore in Bihar

Patna,(BiharTimes): Public sector undertakings (PSUs) in Bihar have suffered an accumulated loss of Rs 3,593.15 crore since their inception.

According to their latest finalised accounts (ending March 31, 2009), vetted by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), the investment (capital and long-term loans) on 63 PSUs in Bihar amounted to Rs 9,140.69 crore during financial year 2009.

As per the CAG report the power sector accounted for 81.78 per cent of the total investment in 2008-09. The government contributed Rs 1,206.93 crore towards equity, loans and grants and subsidies to these PSUs during the financial year.

Out of the operational PSUs, eight earned a cumulative profit of Rs 40.85 crore, while 14 PSUs incurred a loss of Rs 669.47 crore during 2008-09.

The report revealed that Bihar State Financial Corporation (Rs 28.28 crore), Bihar State Mineral Development Corporation Limited (Rs 9.29 crore) and Bihar State Beverages Corporation Limited (Rs 1.51 crore) are some of the profit-making PSUs.

However, the Bihar State Electricity Board (Rs 584.70 crore) and Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (Rs 55.74 crore) incurred heavy losses.
