Patna,(BiharTimes); Noted cardiologist Dr S Shreenivas died in the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday in Heart Hospital, Kankarbagh, Patna. He was 91 and was in the hospital for about a month. He left behind Kishori Sinha, two sons and a daughter.

His last rites was performed at Manikarnika Ghat in Benaras on Tuesday.

The news of death sent shock waves among the doctor community, social activists as well as common men and women.

According to Dr A K Thakar, who was one of his students, Dr Shreenivas was sent to the United States in 1948 to study cardiology on the recommendation of Dr S M Ghoushal.

There he studied in Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and also got an opportunity to take training from Dr Paul Dudle White, a world famous Cardiologist and Professor at Harvard University. The only other trainee Cardiologist from India, who had worked with Dr White at that time, was Dr Padmawati. He also studied under Dr Frank N Wilson, Father of modern Electro-Cardiography.

In 1952 he returned to India and set up Hospital for Cardio-vascular diseases. In 1971 he became the founder-director of Indira Gandhi Institute of Cardiology and served on that post till 1976. He brought with him the first Cardiology (ECG) machine to India.

Born at Birsinghpur village in Samastipur in a family of landlord he got his degree from Prince of Wales Medical College Hospital now called Patna Medical College and Hospital and for further study went to England, US and Sweden.

In 1977 he along with Dr B Bhattacharya, noted Homeopath and some Ayurveds initiated the concept of Polypathy having under one roof all the modalities of treatment be it Allopathy, Homeopathy, Unani, Ayurved, Yoga, Tibbi, Naturopathy, Acupuncture etc. There are 151 ways of treatment which come under Polypathy. In 1997 he organized a Polypathy Conference. Later it was held in Kathmandu, Madrid and Milan.

Prominent doctors of Patna such as Dr S N Mishra, Dr U C Samal, Dr Sanjeev Kumar, Dr Gopal Prasad Singh, Dr Basant Singh, Dr Shahjanand, Dr Vijay Prakash etc condoled his death. A condolence meeting was held in the Zakir Husain Institute, Patna on Tuesday.

He left behind two sons and a daughter. He named his eldest son as Bhairav Usman Priyadarshi. He was named so after Brigadier Usman, who laid down his life in the 1948 Indo-Pak War. The second son was named (Dr) Tandaw Einstein Samdarshi––obviously after the renowned scientist––and daughter Yashodhara Thakur.

He also adopted a Dalit girl, which reflected the true side of his personality.

His multi-faceted personality can be gauged from the fact that in 1993 he represented India in Chicago at the Second World Conference of Parliament of Religions. The first such conference was addressed by Swami Vivekanand exactly a century ago.

In the Barat of one of his sons he, for the sake of fun, took circus animals such as lions, tigers, bears etc as the circus manager, who was under his treatment, was very much impressed by him. He asked him to accompany animals too and the latter obliged.

Dr Shreeniwas once visited the office of BiharTimes with his book on Polypathy and it immediately posted the book on the site for global audience. This has been warmly received by readers. Some of the readers even purchased the book from countries like Switzerland, Japan, the Unied States. One of the readers even informed that they organized a special seminar on Polypathy in the United States.
