Nuclear medicines helpful for cancer treatment: BARC director

 

Patna,(BiharTimes): The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre is going ahead in research work in nuclear medicines which could be helpful in treating cancer.
Inaugurating a four-day international scientific session of the Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (AROICON) 2010 here on Thursday the director of BARC, Dr R K Sinha, said research work in nuclear medicines would help in a big way in diagnosing and treating cancer cases.



Sinha, who did his graduation from Bihar College of Engineering (Now NIT Patna), said that various types of isotopes has been developed at BARC in the field of nuclear medicines to make available the indigenous technology for treatment of cancer without being dependent on help from foreign countries.
Leading Radiation Oncologists of the country gave a detailed information on the latest techniques in radiation therapy for the affected organs without any side-effects.
While Dr Ramesh Billimaga from Bangalore described the use of cyber-knife, the latest radiation technique, which is quite effective and useful in special and delicate cases Dr P K Julka threw light on recent advancement in Clinical Oncology.
National president of the Association of Dr Firuza Patel said that third radiation technique is very effective as it only treats the effected organ and there is no side-effect on other organs of the body.
Dr Vijay Anand Reddy, from Hyderabad, devlivered a lecture on Intenstive Modulated Radio-therapy Technique (IMRT). He said that it is effective as it adjusts the radiation dose as per the need of the patient.
Dr Siddharth Laskar from Mumbai informed about the Intensity-Graded Radio-therapy Treatment and Tomo-therapy. He said in Tomo-therapy, radiation is given to patient in a special way.
At the inaugural session Dr G K Rath said that radiation treatment has become much safer as well was targeted.
At the scientific session Dr M K Mahajan, from Ludhiana, threw light on treatment of head and neck cancer while Dr S N Senapaty from Cuttuck gave details of Gynaecological Oncology. Dr S Hukku from New Delhi gave details of the treatment of lung cancer.
Dr D T Kataria and Dr A K Anand from New Delhi dwelt on treatment of Gastro-Intestinal Malignancy and Genito-Urinary Malignancy.
Organizing Secretary of AROICON 2010, Dr Jitendra Kumar Singh, said that the national session of AROI is being conducted in Bihar after 32 years to discuss in details the conventional and latest techniques for treatment of cancer cases.
