BJP seeks exchange of 20 seats with Janata Dal (U)

Patna,(BiharTimes): The seat-sharing talk between the two NDA constituents in Bihar has reportedly run into rough weather with the BJP seeking exchange of at least 20 seats with the Janata Dal (United).

The BJP plea is that the delimitation has changed the socio-religious configuration of many Assembly constituencies, making them unsuitable for the old caste-based formulas for victory.

According to the BJP sources the party has already identified these 20 constituencies and would take up the matter with the JD(U) and urge the senior alliance partners to swap these seats. Incidentally JD(U) candidates had won in most of these constituencies in 2005.

The BJP’s demand may spark off another row between the two alliance partners. The BJP has decided to persuade the JD(U) leadership to transfer these seats to the BJP for ensuring the NDA’s return to power in the election. But the JD(U)’s problem is that in many of these seats its candidates had won and they would not like to give them up.

The seats sought by the BJP include Ziradei, Bahadurganj, Maharajganj, Raghunathpur, Jehanabad, Obara, Karakat, Barbigha, Dumraon, Bathnaha, Warsliganj, Riga and Chiraiya.

Ziradei was previously a general seat, but after delimitation it has been made reserved, while Karakat, earlier a reserved seat, has now been made general.
