Congress poll panel to suggest Bihar candidates

New Delhi, Sep 10 (IANS) The Congress party's Bihar state election committee will meet in Patna next week to recommend candidates for the upcoming assembly polls.

The meeting, to be held Sep 12-13, will discuss candidates for all the 243 assembly seats and make recommendations to the screening committee headed by Congress general secretary B.K. Hariprasad.

The meeting will be attended by Hariprasad and union Minister Mukul Wasnik, who is in-charge of Congress party affairs in Bihar.

Party leaders said the state election committee meeting will be followed by that of the screening committee in the national capital. The Congress Central Election Committee headed by party president Sonia Gandhi will then finalise the candidates.

Though the elections will be held in six phases, the Congress intends to declare most of its candidates in one go to give them time for electioneering.

Wasnik said the party was to highlight the failures of the Nitish government during its campaigning and convey the message of social unity.

"The politics of other parties is divisive. We are giving a message of unity," Wasnik told IANS.

He said that the manifesto committee headed by senior leader L.P. Sahi has prepared a draft which was being looked into.

The party is also drawing up an election tour programme of its senior leaders.
