Nitish does not want his past be known: RJD

Patna,(BiharTimes):The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has alleged that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is not contesting the assembly election because he does not want his criminal antecedents be known to the people.

Talking to newsmen the RJD leaders Jagatanand Singh (MP), Shakeel Ahmed Khan and Ram Kripal Yadav said that it is a known fact that a contestant has to disclose the details of his or her criminal antecedents in the affidavit mandated by the Election Commission. However, since Nitish is facing serious charge he too will be required to do so. This will damage the reputation of a clean politician he had built for himself in the media.

Proceedings against the chief minister are still pending in a case related to killing of a Congress activist Satyendra Singh near a booth at Pandarak under Barh parliamentary constituency at the time of parliamentary election in November 1991.

The RJD leaders said that the Chief Minister, in the given circumstances, stands to lose his clean image in the eyes of the people as he will have to declare the criminal antecedents in the affidavit. The three leaders challenged Nitish to take electoral plunge if he was not afraid of acknowledging his own criminal past.

“The people of Bihar must know that their Chief Minister has cases registered against him for murder, booth grabbing and kidnapping of a witness,” the RJD leaders said.

Nitish contested the May-June 1991 Lok Sabha election on the then Janata Dal ticket. However, the Election Commission countermanded the election on the plea of large scale irregularitites. The election was again held in November 1991. This election too was marred by violence and killing of a Congress worker.
