Bihar, Jharkhand register fastest growth in Personal Income Tax

Patna,(BiharTimes): Bihar and Jharkhand posted highest growth so far personal income tax (PIT) during the April-July 2010 period as compared to the same period in 2009 is concerned. The rise in the two states have been 95 per cent when compared to the same period in 2009. This was followed by eastern Uttar Pradesh, commonly known as Purvanchal, where the collection increased by 91 per cent.

Western UP or Meerut region saw 51 per cent growth to be followed by Bangalore (50 per cent); Chandigarh (41 per cent); Kanpur (40 per cent); Guwahati (23 per cent); Pune and Kochi (22 per cent) and Nagpur (18 per cent).

The growth in metros, which have reached a saturation point, is much less. Mumbai and Delhi have registered growth by six and four per cent respectively.

Income Tax data suggest that small cities, especially from less developed states, are leaving behind big ones. Metros have now less scope to increase than the new upcoming towns.

The growth in personal income is attributed to robust corporate performance in these regions, which is also reflected in the corporate I-T collection.

A large part of hearland of the country for example, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, Orissa, have shown growth in corporate I-T collection between 25 and 200 per cent during this period as compared to Mumbai (two per cent), Bangalore (six per cent), Chennai (10 per cent), Kolkata (27 per cent), Hyderabad (31 per cent) and Delhi (73 per cent).

As these smaller cities have become important source of revenue the finance ministry has considered devolution of financial and manpower recruitment to regional heads.
