NIT Patna Professor gets laptop adapter patented

Patna,(Bihar): Girish Kumar Choudhary of the Electrical Engineering Department of National Institute of Technology Patna has achieved a rare distinction of getting his research product patented.

After a long and sustained research, Choudhary has designed solar adapters for laptops and other electronic devices.

Choudhary said that operation of laptops depends on the battery contained in their belly. This battery needs repeated charging.

“As our rural areas are devoid of electricity supply, this solar adapter is compatible with laptops requiring different voltages for charging batteries. Two solar panels of 12V, 35 watts can be easily added to a series to get 24 volt and power level suitable for further regulation (DC to DC converter),” he was quoted in the Times of India recently.

“In case solar panel, which produces electricity, is to be used for the operation of laptops, there could be a mismatch of specifications on the two sides, that is, the solar panel side and the laptop side. To overcome this difficulty, an interface component in the form of a solar drive adapter has been designed and developed whose cost will be about Rs 1,000 only.”

According to the report the adapter has been patented by the Controller General of Patents Design and Trade Marks with patent no. 235642 on July 10, 2009, under the Intellectual Property, India.

The device will go a long way in providing uninterrupted and safe service of laptop and other electronic devices in rural areas and would be useful as energy saver both in rural and urban areas.

Choudhary, who has devised this unique adapter along with his co-worker Jitendra Kumar, has got several publications in reputed national and international journals and attended a number of conferences, the report added.
