Meira calls for uplift of women, farmers

Patna,(BiharTimes): Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Saturday called for the uplift of women and distribution of land to the landless as both are essential for the progress of the country.

Speaking on the occasion of the 88th birth anniversary of Sumitra Devi, freedom fighter and first woman minister in the Bihar cabinet, she said just by providing certified seeds and other inputs, the lot of landless farmers could not be improved. They should have the feeling that the land they are tilling belong to them.

The Speaker said that as a large number of Indian still rely on agriculture, its economy would not improve if the lot of farmers was not improved. At the same time condition of labourers should also be bettered.

The function was organised by Samast Kisan Mazdoor Sanghthan at Indira Gandhi Planetarium.

Showering praise on Sumitra Devi, who also happens to be her mother-in law she said that the relationship with her was like mother and daughter.

Meira, a former diplomat and herself the daughter of former deputy prime minister Babu Jagjivan Ram, said she had learnt everything about politics under the guidance of her father and mother-in-law.

She said those days education for girls was not promoted by parents. “But my mother-in-law was sent to school at the age of nine, that too hundreds of kilometer from home. She acquired education from Kanya Gurukul in Aligarh district,” she said.

Meira Kumar said that though much progress has been made, yet even today, condition of women in Indian society is not good. “We need to work hard to improve their situation and also remove discrimination between men and women.”
