Upendra Kushwaha quits party post, Dozen JD(U) MPs sulking

Patna,(BiharTimes): Turmoil is brewing up in Janata Dal (United) following the release of first list on Wednesday. Party’s national general secretary Upendra Prasad Kushwaha resigned from his post. A dozen party MPs are reportedly up in arms against what they alleged neglect of the dedicated party workers.

.

Party MLC Sheo Prasan Yadav announced he would resign his Upper House membership. He even sent his resignation letter to party’s national president Sharad Yadav.

Party workers raised slogans and attacked the state office. They were furious over the denial of tickets to the dedicated workers. The anger was directed against the turncoats. like the former LJP MLA, Izhar Ahmed, who joined the party only a week back after being denied his own party ticket. Highlighting Izhar’s ‘contibution’ as MLA many JD(U) leaders alleged that he was denied ticket by LJP because of his inefficiency and neglect of his own constituency, Ghanshyampur. “How can now the same person be an asset for us. Instead, he is a liability, who would ensure defeat of the party in his constituency. He would drive away a large of workers,” party cadres alleged.

Similar sentiments were heard about the choice of Ashraf Husain from Darbhanga Rural constituency. He was till recently in the Rashtriya Janata Dal and rewarded for crossing over to the Janata Dal (United). Madan Sahni is another RJD man who got ticket.

Party workers are of the view that with Muslim hardly looking towards the Janata Dal (United), especially after a changed atmosphere on the run up to the Babri verdict, it is futile to give ticket to so many of them and that too so many turncoats.

The party dropped five sitting MLAs in the list of 54 announced on Wednesday. They are Manindra Mandal (Madhepura), Bilat Paswan (Sakra), Dilkeshwar Kamat (Trivenigunj), Manzar Alam (Jokihat) and Gangeshwar Sah (Mahisi). Alam was also a junior minister in Nitish Kumar ministry till April 13, 2008. Former Union minister Taslimuddin’s son, Sarfraz, who lost last time, got the ticket.

Nine women, Muslims and Yadavs got ticket. Eight of those who got tickets come from extremely backward castes, while six are dalits and one tribal.

State Janata Dal(U) president Vijay Kumar Chowdhary will contest from Sarairanjan in Samastipur district.

The party is yet to announce the name of its Kishanganj candidate. Media reports speculate that Taslimuddin, who joined JD(U) a few months back, will be fielded from there. But in the last minute his name was withheld.

The ministers who are in the list are Bijendra Prasad Yadav (Supaul), Narendra Narayan Yadav (Alamnagar), Renu Kumari (Bihariganj), Shahid Ali Khan (Sursand), Ramnath Thakur (Samastipur), Hari Prasad Sah (Laukaha) and Dinesh Prasad (Minapur).

Upendra Kushwaha, who resigned from his post, was visibly upset over the decision. However, political observers are of the view that he just wanted to show to his supporters that he did his maximum to ensure ticket, but is helpless. He is not going to take any other step in haste. He had joined the party early this year and got elected to Rajya Sabha only on June 17.
