Bihar panchayat poll candidate's husband murdered

Patna, April 25 (IANS) The husband of a candidate contesting the ongoing Bihar panchayat polls was Monday killed by a group of unidentified men in Nalanda district, police said.

Prem Kumar, husband of Dharhara panchayat's outgoing chief Sudha Devi - who is again running for the post - was shot dead when he was busy campaigning for his wife on the last day of electioneering. Polling in the area will take place in the third round Wednesday.

The killing has created panic and anger among villagers, who staged a protest and demanded action against those responsible for the attack.

Nalanda Superintendent of Police Jitendra Rana said police have began investigation into the case and assured action against the guilty.

A police official in Nalanda told IANS that the killing appeared to be an act of revenge, and the outcome of political rivalry in the ongoing panchayat polls.

Despite the state government's claims of conducting peaceful panchayat polls, there have been many incidents of violence and killings. Last week, three supporters of the ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U) were killed and four seriously injured in firing by a group of unidentified men in a village in Vaishali district, ahead of the second round of panchayat polls.

The first round of the 10-phase panchayat polls last Wednesday saw a police officer and a woman killed in a Maoist attack in Jamui district. The Maoists have issued a poll boycott call and threatened to disrupt the elections.

The polls for 262,000 panchayat posts will end May 28.
