Appointment of VCs: Chancellor urged to reconsider decision

Patna,(BiharTimes): After strong criticism of Raj Bhawan by deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi and HRD minister, Prashant Kumar Shahi, the state government on Friday urged the Governor-cum-Chancellor Devanand Konwar to reconsider his decision in the light of the provisions of the Patna University Act, 1976 and the Bihar State Universities Act, 1976.

The state government’s stand has been that all these appointments have been made by the Chancellor without consulting the government.

Chief minister Nitish Kumar is reported to have approved the HRD department’s proposal for reconsideration of these appointments by Konwar in the capacity as the Chancellor of universities of Bihar.

According to Principal Secretary HRD, Anjani Kumar Singh, in view of the fact that no consultation took place between the Raj Bhawan and the state government on the issue as per the provisions of the Acts, the Chancellor has been requested to reconsider his decision to appoint the new VCs and pro-VCs.
However, the Raj Bhawan has been maintaining from the day one that consultation has taken place before the appointment.

The notification issued by Raj Bhavan too stated that the appointments had been made in consultation with the state government.
The state government had sent to the governor a panel of names more than six months ago for appointment of new VCs, but not a single one was chosen from it.
