National Dairy Research Institute train 330 farmers from Bihar

.Patna,(BiharTimes): The Karnal-based National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) has imparted training to 330 dairy farmers from different districts of Bihar this year.
Out of 11 programmes on scientific dairy farming, nine were sponsored by the Directorate for Dairy Development, Patna and two were sponsored by Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Muzaffarpur.

According to Dr Dalip K. Gosain, Programme Coordinator of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) and Dairy Training Centre (DTC) of NDRI this week 60 farmers in two batches of 30 each from Muzaffarpur and Jamui districts of Bihar were imparted five days training programme on scientific dairy farming that encompassed improved breeding, feeding, healthcare and management, clean milk production in dairy animals by the experts of NDRI he added.

While discussing with the trainees Dr Gosain observed that majority of them were keeping different breeds of cattle having low to moderate milk yield and were ignorant about scientific feeding to the dairy animals.

He found in the discussions that the farmers of Muzaffarpur preferred feeding wheat and paddy straws to their dairy animals whereas farmers of Jamui were little reluctant in feeding wheat straw to their dairy animals.

Manohar Prasad of village Dhanana and Mohinder Paswan of village Danr, both from Aliganj block and Ram Yatin Singh of village Akoni of Sikandra Block of Jamui district said that the wheat straw is not preferred by majority of the farmers in their blocks for feeding to the dairy animals as farmers feel it is hot and aborts the animals. Such straw is usually fed to the non-dairy producing animals. They said that in case they are to purchase the straw for feeding to their animals then they prefer to purchase paddy straw instead of wheat straw.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Gosain explained the feeding of dairy cattle and buffaloes in the institute cattle yard and at different dairy farms in villages. They were convinced that they should feed wheat straw as it has no ill-effects and is being preferred by the majority of dairy farm families in Haryana and Punjab states.

He also stressed that the farmers may adopt feeding of urea treated wheat straw and maize silage to their dairy animals that would economize the feeding.

Dr Gosain in the valedictory session said that the farmers should share the technologies they learnt here with others in their districts so to adopt technologies of scientific dairy farming that would lead to enhanced milk production. He added that dairying has immense potential in Muzaffarpur, Jamui and other districts so that the farmers could get enough milk for their family consumption and also for sale
which would provide them nutritional food and additional income.

Dr Satyapal, Ms Saroj Mehta, Dr S K Gupta, Mohar Singh and other officials of the KVK and DTC imparted the need based training to the trainees.
