After boy, girl falls into manhole

.Patna,(BiharTimes): Nearly three months after a boy fell into a manhole in Bhootnath Road a three-year-old girl, Aarti Kumari, lost her life after she slipped into an open manhole in Pustakalaya Lane in Lohanipur under Kadam Kuan Police Station of the city.
Incidentally Aarti, daughter of Karu Ram, a rickshawpuller, met the tragic end on the eve of the Independence Day of the country.

This is the second time in two months that a child had lost life yet no effort has been made by the state government or Patna Municipal Corporation to cover large number of manholes lying open all over the state capital.

The incident took place at 8.30 on Sunday morning. She died before any attempt could be made to rescue her.

Eyewitnesses said that the accident could have been avoided had the civic authorities been alert about the hazard of open manholes in the city.

It needs to be recalled that Roshan Kumar lost his life after he fell into an uncovered manhole in Bhoothnath Road under Agamkuan police station last May.

Mayor Afzal Imam had repeatedly accused the state government of not releasing fund meant fot the Patna Municipal Corporation.

The area where Karu’s family live has two uncovered manholes. The girl stepped out of her house to play and fell into one of them.

Local residents of the area staged a protest against the apathy of the PMC. The district administration and police officers rushed to the spot to pacify them. The family of the deceased was given Rs 11,000 as compensation.

Never in the recent memory of Patna two kids have fallen into the manhole in such a quick succession.
