Ganga water enters Bhagalpur villages

.Patna,(BiharTimes): Waters of river Ganga breached two revenue embankments in Bhagalpur district on Thursday inundating three dozen villages of Naugachia sub-division of the district. The river has exceeded its danger level for the first time since 2003, clambering 34.14 m beyond its tipping point.

The six-km long embankment in Kharik block of the district, was under intense pressure since Sunday last. It finally caved in during the early hours of Thursday notwithstanding efforts to plug the breach using sandbags and boulders.

Four spurs holding together the revenue embankment at Gopalpur block in the north, came under severe pressure and finally got breached.

According to Water Resource Minister Vijay Chaudhary flood-fighting work was being executed on a war footing. The Bhagalpur district administration had meanwhile urgently pressed a fleet of 100 boats into service. Meanwhile, the Kosi, the Bagmati and the Burhi-Gandak have exceeded their danger-mark in the districts of Supaul, Sitamarhi, Khagaria and Katihar.
