Govt not accepting opposition’s suggestions on Lokayukta Bill: Siddiqui

Patna,(BiharTimes): A day after the Bihar cabinet gave its nod to the ‘revised’ Bihar Lokayukta Bill 2011 Leader of opposition in the state Assembly Abdul Bari Siddiqui on Friday accused chief minister Nitish Kumar of indulging in oneupmanship.

Talking to newsmen on the opening day of the Winter Session of the state Assembly he said the chief minister is in a great haste as he wants to be first in the country to get the Lokayukta Bill made into an act.

Incidentally, Uttarakhand has already enacted a law recently in this regard and has left Bihar back.

According to Siddiqui, if the Bihar Lokayukta Bill is enacted in utter haste it would not be foolproof, and, therefore, the government would be forced to make a number of amendments. He said that the leaders of opposition parties at the all-party meeting had impressed on the chief minister that the Centre was in the process of making a strong Lokpal, which could also have a bearing on the Bihar Lokayukta.

Siddiqui said that the opposition parties are not opposed to a powerful Lokayukta. In fact the suggestions of the opposition parties were practical and they should have been heeded.

The Leader of opposition also took strong exception to the short Winter Session of the state legislature, which would have only three days next week for conducting its business. He said the government was concerned merely about completing legislative business, but the opposition members would not be able to raise issues like rising crime graph, acute fertilizer scarcity, obstacles to paddy procurement, pitiable condition of farmers, corruption etc. But they would not get opportunity to raise them, he added.

Earlier, the House was adjourned to meet again on Monday after making obituary reference to eminent people who died recently.
