56% women of Bihar face physical, sexual exploitation

Patna,(BiharTimes): Bihar is among the leading states so far physical and sexual violence against women are concerned.

This fact came to light at a state-level seminar on "Violence Against Women" held in Patna on Friday.

According to Managing Director, Women Development Corporation (WDC), Bihar, Vandana Kinni a total of 56% of women, aged 15 to 49, are subjected to physical or sexual violence in Bihar against the national figure of 35%.

The one-day seminar was organized by the Department of Rural Studies of Patna University (PU) in coordination with the ActionAid and NIDAN.

More than 58% of women in Bihar become mother when they attain the age of 19. Among other indices women’s work participation is very low in Bihar. It is just 18.4%.

Kinni said that the WDC has 34 helplines in Bihar. So far, it solved around 8,400 cases of domestic disputes with mutual agreement of the parties concerned. WDC received around 12,000 such cases during the last eight years.

The Chairperson of the State Child Rights Protection Commission Nisha Jha, while speaking on the occasion, called for more rationality in relationships.

The Head of the Personnel Management and Industrial Relations Department, PU, Prabhakar Jha informed that fortnight-long celebrations are being organized internationally to create more awareness about violence against women. The seminar was a part of it.

PU vice-chancellor Sambhu Nath Singh and state’s labour commissioner Dhirendra Mohan Jha also spoke about exploitation of women.
