Eight killed as Maoists attack MP's convoy in Jharkhand

Ranchi, Dec 3, (IANS) Eight people, including six policemen, were killed and three others were injured as Maoist guerrillas attacked Independent Lok Sabha MP Inder Singh Namdhari in Jharkhand's Latehar district Saturday, officials said.

"Eight people, including six policemen, have been killed in a Maoist attack. As Namdhari was returning to Chatra after inaugurating a college, the Maoist guerrillas first detonated a landmine when his convoy was passing through Satbarwa village and later started firing on the police party."

"A bus carrying civilians reached the spot and got trapped in the firing. Some civilians have also been killed," Latehar's Deputy Commissioner Rahul Purwa told IANS over telephone.

Namdhari, who had a close shave in the attack, returned safely to Chatra.

Talking to reporters, he said: "When we crossed the Koel river I heard a blast. My driver told that it was landmine blast. We did not stop the car."

The three injured including two women have been admitted to a local hospital in Chatra district.
