Nitish applauds female journalists, cautions male counterparts

Patna,(BiharTimes): Chief minister Nitish Kumar is considered as a good friend of media barons. But what he said on Friday, while inaugurating the Eastern Region Workshop on “Women in Media”, came as a big surprise to many present on the occasion. The seminar was organised by South Asian Women in Media in collaboration with Oxfam India.

Applauding the contribution of women to journalism the chief minister said electronic and print media have witnessed big changes and have now modernised management. Media houses have, of late, adopted a hire-and-fire policy. The situation is more challenging under such circumstances. Journalists are highly paid but when they are fired, it becomes difficult for them to maintain their life.

The chief minister said a time would come when male journalists would have to worry, as they could be counted on fingers. He also said experienced female journalists would soon face a challenge from girls coming from villages who would enter the field of journalism.

He said that women’s interest in the profession is a boost to their empowerment. Nitish said a social revolution is underway and there was no gender bias in society. He also spoke on the risks involved in journalism, irrespective of gender.

The chief minister said every profession has its own risks but journalism has more. While the profession is not safe for even men, it is more unsafe for women.
