Patna,(BiharTimes): Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, who also holds the finance portfolio in the Nitish cabinet, on Monday admitted that only 4,053 traders and dealers were regularly paying tax in Bihar.

The commercial taxes department is earning Rs 2,423 crore, which is 80% of its total tax collection, from 301 big traders alone and another 4% from 166 traders.

However, the deputy chief minister explained that under the VAT regulations, businessmen dealing in medicine, fertilizer, petrol, diesel and liquor have the liberty to pay one-time tax after which they are free from tax liability. The state government is hopeful of bringing about 10,000 traders in tax ambit by next financial year.
