PMC land worth Rs 2,500 crore encroached by land mafia

Patna,(BiharTimes): Land worth Rs 2,500 crore of Patna Municipal Corporation has been encroached by various big and small land mafia.
After the Patna High Court came down heavily on it the Corporation is reportedly planning to recover them. Whether it succeeds or not is altogether a different story.

Authorities blame the rising price of land in Patna to these encroachments. They are of the view that if all these land are recovered from the mafia and residential and commercial structures built the real estate price would crash down. It needs to be recalled that in the last five years the price of land and apartments in Patna have got doubled and tripled. Though Surat in Gujarat is a relatively big city and definitely much more industrialised those in the business say that the price is almost half that of Patna.
Recently a senior Corporation official was quoted in the Telegraph as saying: “PMC owns about 400 acres of land in prime localities across the city. But the land mafia is in possession of much of it over the past several years. If this land can be rescued and used for commercial and residential purposes, property prices in the city will come down.”
But the land mafia with right political and administrative connections would not allow this to happen.
“In places like Frazer Road, Buddha Marg and Exhibition Road, a kattha of land costs up to Rs one crore. Had the government plots been available, the price would have been much less,” Nilesh Kumar Sinha, an owner of city-based real estate company, Om Construction, was quoted.
Now the government has appointed a private consultant to study and survey the land owned by PMC. The report is likely to be available in 10 days.
“Once there is a clear picture of the available land, we can plan better on how to use it. But this will take time,” the official said.
