Nearly 1500 turles seized in Bihar

Patna, Feb 14 (IANS) Bihar Police seized nearly 1,500 turtles Monday in Gaya district and arrested two people, who were part of a gang smuggling rare turtles, an official said.

Acting on a tip-off, a police team nabbed the two men from near Barachatti in Gaya, about 100 km from here, he said.

There is huge demand in the international market for these rare species of turtles with distinct star marks on their shells.

India has banned the trade of turtles under the 1972 Wildlife Protection Act, but the huge premium and lax implementation of laws are increasingly luring smugglers to the illegal trade

somewhat comforting news from Bihar in the sense that wildlife laws are being implemented. Bihar government alongwith forest department should act tough now and also put those people behind bars who openly trade in birds like parakeets, munias etc. on the streets of Patna. Not only that snake charmers are openly display rock python(a schedule I specie whose unlawful possession is enough to put anyone behind bars for upto 7 years) and other endangered snake species openly in Gandhi Maidan. What to say of Sonepur fair where all wildlife laws are openly flouted by trading openly in protected birds and other wildlife creatures and that too in full knowledge of law enforcing agencies.
