Sharp rise in smuggling of contraband items from Nepal

Patna,(BiharTimes): There is sharp rise in smuggling of contraband items from Nepal into Bihar through the 726-km porous international border in the recent months.

Reports said that the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Patna Frontier, seized over 1,892 kg ganja worth Rs 70 lakh, 63.9 kg charas worth Rs 5.50 crore, one kg brown sugar worth Rs 1.60 crore and half kg heroin worth Rs 40 lakh in the international market in the month of January 2011.

Besides, betel nuts, fertilizers, foodgrains, clothes, cattle, electronics, vehicles and foreign goods worth over Rs 1.19 crore were also seized in this period. Forest products, including wood log, timber and timber wood worth Rs 1.85 lakh, were also seized. The SSB arrested 97 persons in this connection.

SSB sources said that two battalions, each comprising 1100 jawans, would be deployed by 2012 to check the rampant smuggling through the border.

The figure shows that the SSB seized ganja, charas, opium and heroin worth Rs 47.11 crore between July 1 and December 31 last year and arrested 66 people in this connection.

Though the SSB blames the local smuggler gangs, who use women too for this purpose, local villagers living on the bordering villages told BiharTimes that its personnel are also involved in such illegal activities. They also harass the villagers if they resist their activities.
