CBI takes over Kesri case, to probe motive behind murder too

Patna,(BiharTimes): Even as the Chief Judicial Magistrate Purnea D L Prasad on Thursday rejected the bail petition of Rupam Pathak, the lady principal who stabbed to death the BJP MLA from Purnea, Raj Kishore Kesri, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) finally took over the probe into the murder.

According to the CBI joint director Javed Ahmad a team of CBI officials would visit Purnia on Friday (February 25) and take possession of the evidence collected by the district police which has so far been probing the case. The CBI personnel would also talk to witnesses in the case.

What is significant is that apart from the murder, the CBI would also probe the motive behind the killing.

Kesri was stabbed to death allegedly by Rupam at his home on January 4 morning. Rupam charged the MLA and his aide, Bipin Rai, with repeatedly raping her.

The incident sent a shock wave with woman groups taking to streets demanding action against the deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi, who immediately after the murder called Rupam a blackmailer. According to Rupam, she was forced to withdraw the case of repeated rape last year.

Though the Purnea police arrested Navlesh Pathak, the journalist, who first broke the story of Rupam in his local weekly, it is yet to arrest Bipin Rai, whom the lady principal repeatedly accused of raping her.

It was after much furore that Modi wrote to the chief minister Nitish Kumar requesting him to order the CBI probe. The latter ordered the probe by the central investigative agency.

However, there was confusion that the state government has only ordered probe into the murder of the MLA and not the circumstances, which led to the murder. Javed Ahmad now clarified the matter by stating that the motive of the murder would also be investigated.

Meanwhile, the CJM on Thursday rejected Rupam's bail petition moved by Patna-based lawyer Dinesh Kumar. Her judicial custody was extended by 14 days.
