Patna, Jan 17 (IANS) With the cold relenting, Bihar students were back in school Monday after a prolonged winter break. The human resource development (HRD) department Sunday decided to open all government and private schools. "We ordered to reopen all schools as there is respite from the cold weather," HRD principal secretary Anjani Kumar Singh said.

There was some respite from the biting cold in the state as Patna recorded a minimum temperature of 9.4 degrees Celsius.
The schools were closed till Jan 4 for Christmas and New Year holidays. But due to the cold wave, the Bihar government extended the closure till last week.

"All public and private schools remained closed as the intense cold forced the government to extend the closure of schools four times in the past three weeks. It has hit school education," said Shanti Sinha, the mother of a student.

The cold wave claimed nearly 100 lives in Bihar over the past two weeks. Dense fog disrupted air and rail services.
