Schools asked to reserve 25% seats for poor; management to move court

Patna,(BiharTimes): The Patna district administration on Sunday directed all CBSE/ICSE-affiliated schools in the district to reserve 25 per cent of the available seats in Class I/Nursery for children belonging to weaker sections of the society.

The district magistrate Jitendra Kumar Sinha issued the directive at a meeting with principals or representatives of these schools. As many as 75 schools were represented in the meet. They were also directed to inform the administration about the number of seats available in these sections in their respective schools. The District Education Officer, Kiran Kumari, was also present on the occasion.

Under the Right to Education (RTE) Act the schools have been asked to reserve seats for children belonging to weaker sections and hailing from the neighborhood of the school, that is, a radius of one km. Half of this quota will be reserved for girls.

As per the RTE Act the quota is mandatory from this academic year itself. No child should be subjected to screening at the time of admission.

Meanwhile, the Association of Independent Schools, Bihar, has decided to move the court against the manner in which the Right to Education Act is being implemented. Bihar Public Schools and Children Welfare Association has decided to back the Association in the protest.

The management of these schools claimed that the school authorities are confused over how to go about the implementation of RTE directive and fear that the quality of education would suffer and the management of school would go haywire.
