Former Union minister Chaturanan Mishra passes away

Patna,(BiharTimes): Former Union Agriculture Minister and senior CPI leader Chaturanan Mishra died after a prolonged illness in All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi on Saturday afternoon. He was 86.
He was undergoing treatment in AIIMS for quite some time.

Chaturanan, who served as minister under Deve Gowda and Indra Kumar Gujral ministry in mid-1990s was a freedom fighter who took part in the Quit India Movement at a very young age. He was seriously injured in Darbhanga jail then, though he was hardly 17.

Born in Nahar village of Madhubani district on April 7, 1925 he, along with late Bhogendra Jha was two tallest CPI leader of their time. Now within a span of a few years both had left the world.

Chaturanan was elected to the state Assembly thrice between 1969 and 1980. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1984 and Lok Sabha in 1996, when the CPI allied with ruling Janata Dal of Lalu Prasad Yadav. He represented Madhubani parliamentary election. It was between 1996 and 1998 that the CPI joined the government for the first time in the Centre and became a constituent of the United Front.

He was also the national president of All India Trade Union Congress. CPI leaders A B Bardhan and D Raja condoled his death.
