Big jump in vehicles’ sale causing jams in Patna

Patna,(BiharTimes): Jam, jam and more jam. Not only in Mahatma Gandhi Setu but wherever you go in Patna.
True, the repair work in Rajendra rail-cum-road bridge near Mokamah and bad policing are the factors responsible for choking of traffic in Mahtama Gandhi Setu. But there is another very important factor which is attributed to the jam everywhere in the state capital. That is the big jump in the sale of vehilces in Patna and several other cities.

According to traffic police department the number of vehicles has increased by 280 per cent in matter of a few months. For example, it was 2.93 lakh in October 2009; the figure reached 4.29 lakh by March 2010 and then to 5.11 lakh by January 2011.
A study says that about 1.83 lakh vehicles enter and go out from Patna every day. A large number of them constitute the traffic on the Mahatma Gandhi Setu.
Though the sale of bicycles have not declined as students still prefer it yet its percentage have come down steadily because of the sharp rise in the sale of motorized vehicles and two-wheelers.
Bicycles now constitute less than 11 per cent of the vehicles whereas it was 30 per cent in 1994.
The sale of scooty has jumped many times. This is simply because of the expansion of the city and sharp rise in fuel prices. As it is easy to ride, girls and women prefer them most.
But this fast jump in the number of vehicles is causing pollution, which is not good for health. Patna is one of the most polluted cities of the country. It is feared that the situation is likely to worsen in the future.
Though recently efforts have been made to introduce some more city buses yet it has not succeeded in reducing the pressure on roads as Patnaites, unlike the people of metros, prefer their own vehicles or auto-rickshaws.
