Breast cancer taking epidemic form in Patna

Patna,(BiharTimes): Even as cancer is becoming more and more curable more than 20,000 women in Patna were affected by breast cancer in the last 10 years.
In that way 200 women get affected by this disease every month.


Late pregnancy, shorter duration of breast-feeding, regular intake of contraceptive pills for more than 10 years, smoking and drinking and irregular lifestyle are some of the reasons for developing of breast cancer.


Speaking on the occasion of cancer awareness programme in Patna on Thursday BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha, said, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in India, next to
cervical cancer. In urban areas, it is the most common cancer, leaving behind the cervical one.
Quoting data he added 70 per cent of cancer iscurable and the rest 30 per cent is controllable, if detected at an early stage.


According to Dr Jitendra Kumar Singh, Director, Mahavir Cancer Sansthan, who also spoke, one in every 22 women in the country has a chance of developing breast cancer. By this rate the cases of breast cancer would increase 2.5 times by 2030.


Dr Manisha Singh, senior doctor at Mahavir Cancer Sansthan, said there are two methods for early detection of breast cancer––self-examination that could be done on the sixth day of the menses and X-ray of the breast called, Mammography, done at regular intervals, say every two years. The cost of doing this is Rs 500. After the age of 30, a woman should regularly examine herself and after 35, regular Mammography is a must.


The programme was organized by Breast Cancer Foundation-India, Bihar and Jharkhand chapter, under the aegis of Science and IT Society of Magadh Mahila College.
