Bihar government orders CBI probe into doctor's lynching

Patna, June 6 (IANS) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the brutal murder of a doctor by jail inmates last week, officials said Monday.
Buddhadev Singh was beaten to death May 29 in the Gopalganj district jail when he went inside a ward to conduct the medical check-up of a prisoner.

Nitish Kumar recommended a CBI probe into the incident after meeting the doctor's family members, an official in the chief minister's office here said.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar last Tuesday admitted that administrative lapses led to the lynching of the doctor and removed Gopalganj district magistrate and inspector general of prison after the incident. He also announced a compensation of Rs.10 lakh to the family of the deceased. All the government doctors in Bihar observed a day-long strike Tuesday to protest the incident.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) also issued notice to the state chief secretary to submit a report on the shocking incident within two weeks.

Police in Gopalganj said that two of the main accused in the lynching incident were taken in police remand for two days Friday.
