Honeymoon kidnapping, a new challenge before
Patna Police

Patna,(BiharTimes): After marriages at gunpoint it is now the era of honeymoon kidnapping. As high as 46 girls and 18 boys went missing in the past
five months in Patna alone. Most of them were teenagers, between the age of 12 and 17, that is, before acquiring marriageable age.

But the Superintendent of Police, Shivdeep Lande, has a different take on it. He was quoted in The Times of India as saying that most of these girls eloped with their lovers but their parents, lodge case of kidnapping in a bid to save social prestige and embarrassment.

According to him out of 37 gilrs recovered since February last almost all of them confessed that they had willingly eloped with their lovers. The SP also said that around 80 per cent of these girls show their marriage certificate after their return. It is other thing that some of them are not even 18.

Most of these girls belong to average middle class families, while some others belong to upper
class families too.In families were both the parents are working their kids get ample time and privacy for affairs,he added.

Police are finding it difficult to take up this new menace as in most of the cases parents are well aware of the whereabouts of their daughters, yet they pretend to be ignorant.

Police officials are of the view that if the girl happens to be underaged this trend could be dangerous. The police are bound to put pressure on the family of boys involved in the elopement. But in several cases the family members are genuinely not aware.

The figure given out by the police says that since February last 23 cases have been registered in Patna City, seven in Kadam Kuan police station, six each under Kankarbagh and Patrakarnagar police stations, three at Buddha Colony and two each in Kotwali, Gandhi Maidan and Pataliputra Colony police station. Digha, Parsa Bazar, Peerbahore and Rajiv Nagar police stations also reported one case of honeymoon kidnapping each.
