Senior IPS officer fear threat to his life from rail mafia

Patna,(BiharTimes): Sounds surprising nevertheless true. A senior IPS officer of Bihar has sought security from the central government as he feels threat to his life for the work he did as the Superintendent of Railway Police in 2001-03 when Nitish Kumar was the Railway Minister.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has responded to his letter and has asked the Bihar government to provide adequate security to the 1994 batch IPS officer, Amitabh Kumar Das.

He is at present posted as Commandant of BMP, stationed at Jamalpur in Munger district. The central security agencies had earlier reported to the ministry about the threat perception to Das, who was credited with exposing the nexus between some politicians of the state with the railway contractors during his stint as Superintendent of Railway Police in Patna between August 2001 and May 2003.

Media reports suggest that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs wrote to the Bihar government on May 31 last and asked for adequate security to Das. The letter was written by deputy secretary, N I Chaudhary.

Reports also said that a copy of letter has been sent to DGP for necessary action. Das reportedly apprehended threat to his life from the railway mafia. A letter written by Das said that some contractors with criminal antecedents had virtually grabbed the contract on three important routes. The letter was written to the former DIG (Railway) Subodh Kumar Singh, (the copies of which were available to the state police headquarters) and Chairman of the Railway Board.

According to it while the Patna-Mokamah route was in the hand of the mafia led by Suraj Bhan Singh, who was then a prominent leader of Janata Dal (United), the Patna-Mughalsarai route was controlled by Sunil Pandey, Janata Dal (United) MLA and one of the founders of Ranvir Sena, the outlawed private army of the landed class of Bihar. The work for doubling the Patna-Gaya line was given to Babloo Singh of the infamous Pandav gang. Suraj Bhan later left the Nitish camp to join Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party.

Political observers are surprised by Das’ letter to the Centre. The moot question is: Why is he feeling threatened now for the work he did a decade ago? However, some people close to him alleged that he is feeling neglected and ignored by the present state government and thus is feeling insecure.
