Make Patna AIIMS functional by Oct 2, 2012

Patna,(BiharTimes): A division bench of the Patna High Court on Wednesday directed the Centre to make the proposed Jayaprakash Narayan All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) functional by October 2, 2012.

The bench comprising Justice Prakash Chandra Verma and Justice Aditya Kumar Trivedi directed the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry to ensure that the AIIMS, which is under-construct in Patna, made operational by that time.


The High Court said that any failure in this regard would be treated as a matter of contempt. It must be recalled that the Council for Protection of Civil Rights and Liberty had filed a PIL in 2005 requesting the Court to order necessary direction for construction of Jayaprakash Narayan Institute of Medical Sciences at Phulwarisharif in Patna. Its foundation stone was laid in 2004.


According to the counsel of petitioner, M P Gupta, the Centre had then promised that the proposed hospital would be made functional in the next three years, but nothing was done. After the High Court’s intervention, the state government provided 100 acres of land for the construction of AIIMS,
