Bihar Congress legislator quits, joins JD-U

Patna, March 14 (IANS) A senior Congress leader and Bihar legislator Mahachandra Prasad Singh quit the party and joined the ruling Janata Dal-United (JD-U) Monday.
Singh resigned from primary membership of the Congress party Sunday to protest what he said was the centre's failure to grant special status to Bihar.

He joined the JD-U in the presence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar here.

Kumar welcomed Singh in the JD-U and lauded his stand to support the demand of special status to Bihar.

Singh said that not considering special status to Bihar, despite the dire financial situation following the carving out of Jharkhand from it, was an insult to the nine crore people of the state.

He reacted strongly when asked if his move had more to do with his re-election to the legislative council than anything else.

His present term in the council will expire in April and the election to Saran graduate constituency seat, which he represents, will be held before that.

He denied that his resignation had anything to do with his election.
