Bihar’s per capita milk consumption only 143 gm against national average of 254 gm: Minister

 

Patna,(BiharTimes): The per capita consumption of milk in Bihar is around 143 gm per day in comparison to the national average of 254 gm per day.

This disclosure was made in the state Assembly on Thursday by the Animal Husbandry Minister Giriraj Singh while replying to a short-notice question of Renu Devi (BJP).

He said that the government is also taking suitable steps to promote dairyindustry so that milk produced by farmers is properly marketed to helpthem get adequate returns on their milk produce.

The minister added that the aim of the government is to facilitate fair return on milk produce of every farmer. He said steps taken by the government would both promote and strengthen dairy industry in the state further.

Giriraj said companies like Nestle, Mother Dairy and a few others had shown interest in making investment in this sector and added that during 2007-08 dairy set up and equipment were installed in Nalanda district for production of dairy products, milk powder and tetra pack.

The minister said that in the next five years milk produced by every farmer would be tapped by the dairy industry. Future prospects of milk producers in the state are bright. No dairy farmer or milk-producing region would be left out from the reach of the expanding dairy industry.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Narendra Kumar Singh said the government had decided to announce in advance through advertisements that railway rakes loaded with fertilizers would be reaching the districts concerned. The earlier practice was that the government used to announce the fertilizer quota of various districts.

The new move would alert in advance fertilizer dealers and retainers as well as farmers to the availability of fertilizers in their districts, Singh said while replying to a short-notice question of Achyutanand (BJP). He also said the department would take actionagainst any retailer if he is found forcing farmers to make conditional purchase of DAP fertilizer if they want to purchase only urea.
