Siddique alleges Rs 4,000 crore revenue loss to BSEB; seeks CBI probe

Patna,(BiharTimes): Holding the officials and engineers responsible for revenue loss worth Rs 4,000 crore in the Bihar State Electricity Board, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Abdul Bari Siddiqui on Wednesday shot off a letter to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar demanding a CBI probe into the matter.

Stating that the state agency was incapable of probing the matter Siddiqui said that investigation by the central agency would help check rampant electricity theft, and would thus help increase the revenue of the Board and improve power supply in the state.

Siddiqui, who has served in the Lalu-Rabri regime for long claimed that 53 industrial units had been found guilty of involvement in deliberate theft of electricty by tampering meters and resorting to other measures apparently with the help of BSEB engineers.

He questioned why the concerned department relaxed the rules of penalty and allowed those involved in electricity theft to get away with minor fines. The BSEB instead of penalising the guilty units allowed self-declaration by commercial consumers on electricity theft and a token fine. It later barred suprise checks
at the industrial installations to detect electricity thefts.

Siddique alleged that relaxation in the BSEB rules since 2008 were pointer to the involvement of its officials and engineers in causing revenue loss to the former for personal gains. If the penalties to be realized from all firms and industrial units in the state were added then the amount would exceed Rs 4,000 crore.

According to the letter the revenue loss to BSEB was caused by its officials and engineers in collusion with 'some powerful people in power'.
