Breath-analyzers to check drunk driving on Patna streets

Patna,(BiharTimes): Like train-drivers, vehicle-drivers of Patna will have to undergo checks by breath-analyzers. The move has been taken following rise in case of drunk driving in the state capital.


Traffic policemen would be equipped with breath-analyzers, a battery-operated device that reveals alcohol content in a person’s blood by sampling the breath.


According to the SSP, Patna, Alok Kumar, if caught with alcohol level exceeding 30 mg per 100ml of blood, drunken drivers will have to undergo imprisonment of six months or a fine up to Rs 2,000 or both awaits the drunken drivers.


For a subsequent offence committed within three years of the first offence, the imprisonment may extend to two years or fine up to Rs 3,000 or both. This punishment is prescribed under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act.


Two breath-analyzers have been issued to the city traffic for taking action against those who drive under its influence.


This equipment has been in use in railways to check rise in cases of drunk driving, which is one of the causes of accident. Sometimes drivers under the influence of liquor would over-shoot the red signal.
