Bihar to set up Ombudsman: CM

Patna,(BiharTimes): Before flying to Delhi for the third time within a fortnight chief minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday made it amply clear that his government would soon set up “a transparent Ombudsman” to completely weed out corruption from the state.

Talking to newsmen after the cabinet meeting on Tuesday he said that the Ombudsman would actually be a vigilance committee with people’s participation which will keep close surveillance on the functioning of representatives and officials of local bodies in panchayats.

Like Gujarat and several other states Bihar too has no Lokayukta. This issue was furiously raised by many critics after Anna Hazare praised the governments of Gujarat and Bihar for doing well on the corruption front.

Nitish said that panchayat elections held in Bihar in 2006 and 2011 were impartial and the transparent Ombudsman would take immediate action against ‘erring’ representatives or officials of local bodies.
Stating that the Right to Service Act will be implemented from June 15 he said that officials would be trained for providing the services.

He said he would meet former President A P J Abdul Kalam and Union Water Resources Minister Salman Khursheed in his latest trip to Delhi. Nitish said he would request Kalam to ensure that the works continued on a war-footing on the Nalanda International University (NIU). Kalam is its Visitor and NIU is in fact his brainchild.

The chief minister said that he would request Salman Khursheed to facilitate bilateral talks with Nepal to solve the problems relating to river Kosi in Kusaha.
