Five days after Roshan’s death no manhole covered in Patna

Patna,(BiharTimes): Though five days have passed since nine year old Roshan died after falling into a manhole, none of the death traps have been covered in the state capital.
Instead 2,500 fourth grade employees of the Patna Municipal Corporation have been on strike since that same morning, that is, Saturday.

On the onset of monsoon one may find heaps of garbage on roadsides or waterlogging at various points in the city.

The agitation by the fourth grade employees of the Patna Municipal Corporation engaged in clearning works had on Tuesday compelled it to cancel a meeting.

The cleaning employees, among other things, are demanding regular payment of salaries, regularisation of daily wagers, assured career promotion benefits, increase in dearness allowances, maternity leave for women and clearance of outstanding dues.

The Patna Mayor had last week already told a section of media that the Corporation has not been getting the matching grant from the state government for the last three years.

The striking employees on Tuesday stormed into the PMC office at Maurya Lok Complex and paralysed work. Even the Mayor could not go to the office because of the unruly scene created by the employees. They raised slogans against the PMC Commissioner and other officials and squatted in the office complex and refused to budge till their demands are met.

According to Nand Kishore Das, the general secretary of the PMC Fourth Grade Staff Union they would intensify their agitation if the PMC authorities and the state government did not fulfil what he said their genuine demands.

Though the strike started having its impact on the city the Mayor claims that cleaning works are on as they have been assigned to a private company.
